This 9 day Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu is one of the most challenging, spectacular, interesting and most beautiful treks in all of Peru. This expedition over long ago abandoned Incan Roads off the beaten paths, climbing high passes and exploring the mysteries of the rich cloud forest, takes you to two of the major archaeological sites in the Cusco-area and Peru.
First the remote and less well known ruined Inca city Choquequirao (The Sister City Of Machu Picchu) and then the mystical and famous Seventh Wonder of the World Machu Picchu.
Since the re-discovery of Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham in July 1911, the ruin has been a topic of discussions and research about the Incas, and finally in 1981 the Peruvian government established The Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, same that in 1983 where honored by UNESCO as World Heritage. As much one can find of writings and histories about Machu Picchu, the little one can find about the latter, but not less interesting ruin complex of Choquequirao.
Choquequirao (Cradle of Gold) is a partly excavated ruined Inca city which bears a striking similarity in structure and architecture to Machu Picchu. It is often referred to as the ‘sister’ of Machu Picchu. The ruins at Choquequirao are comprised of buildings and terraces at different levels from the lower level Sunch’u Pata to the hill top. The hill top has been leveled and ringed with stones to form a large platform.
